Medication Management in Brooklyn, NY

in Brooklyn, NY and Online

At Mind Body Psychiatry, our board-certified psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners provide expert medication management with a holistic mindset. We believe in using medications thoughtfully, as one valuable tool within a comprehensive treatment approach that considers all aspects of your wellbeing.

Our Philosophy on Medications

A Balanced, Patient-Centered Approach

We maintain a moderate and conservative approach to medication care. This means:

  • Prescribing medication only when the potential benefits clearly outweigh the risks
  • Starting with the lowest effective doses to minimize side effects
  • Regularly evaluating whether medications are achieving your treatment goals
  • Considering the option of reducing or discontinuing medications when appropriate
  • Respecting your preferences and concerns about medication use

Our providers view medication as a tool to reduce suffering and create space for healing; not as a complete solution on its own.

Our Medication Management Process

Initial Assessment

We don't just manage symptoms, we investigate underlying factors like sleep, nutrition, hormones, and life stressors that affect your mental health.

  • Current and past symptoms
  • Previous medication experiences
  • Medical history and ongoing health conditions
  • Family history
  • Lifestyle factors
  • Personal treatment preferences

Shared Decision Making

Before prescribing any medication, your provider will:

  • Explain how the recommended medication works
  • Discuss potential benefits and possible side effects
  • Answer all your questions
  • Explore alternatives when appropriate
  • Respect your decision about whether to include medication in your treatment

Ongoing Monitoring

Regular follow-up appointments allow us to:

  • Assess medication effectiveness
  • Monitor for side effects
  • Make dosage adjustments as needed
  • Coordinate with your therapist and other providers
  • Reevaluate the continued need for medication

Common Medications We Prescribe

A Balanced, Patient-Centered Approach

Our providers have extensive experience managing various psychiatric medications, including:

  • Antidepressants: For depression, anxiety disorders, and other conditions
  • Anti-anxiety medications: For anxiety disorders, with careful attention to dependency risks
  • Mood stabilizers: For bipolar disorder and mood instability
  • Stimulants and non-stimulants: For ADHD and focus-related issues
  • Sleep medications: For insomnia and sleep disturbances
  • Antipsychotic medications: For appropriate conditions, often at lower doses

We stay current with the latest research and guidelines to offer the most effective and appropriate medication options.

Medication Management + Therapy: A Powerful Combination

Research consistently shows that for many mental health conditions, the combination of medication and therapy is more effective than either treatment alone. Our providers collaborate closely with your therapist—whether at Mind Body Psychiatry or elsewhere—to ensure your treatments work together optimally.

This integrated approach helps:

  • Address both biological and psychological aspects of mental health
  • Develop coping skills that enhance medication benefits
  • Reduce reliance on medication when possible
  • Create sustainable improvements in wellbeing

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if medication is right for me?

Medication may be helpful if you're experiencing significant symptoms that interfere with your daily functioning, relationships, or quality of life despite trying other approaches. During your evaluation, your provider will help assess whether medication might be beneficial based on your specific symptoms, history, and preferences. Medication isn't right for everyone, and the decision to start medication is always yours.

How long will it take for psychiatric medication to work?

Different medications have different timelines. Some anxiety medications may provide relief within hours or days, while most antidepressants typically take 4-8 weeks to show their full effects. During your appointment, your provider will discuss what to expect with any prescribed medication, including when you might notice improvements and what side effects could occur initially. We'll schedule appropriate follow-up appointments to monitor your progress.

What about side effects of psychiatric medications?

All medications can have side effects, though many people experience few or minimal side effects, especially with careful prescribing. Before starting any medication, your provider will discuss potential side effects and ways to minimize them. We often start with low doses and increase gradually to reduce side effect risk. If you do experience troublesome side effects, contact us promptly. Often a simple adjustment can resolve the issue.

Can I take nutritional supplements alongside my psychiatric medication?

As part of our integrative approach, we often recommend specific supplements that may complement medication treatment. However, some supplements can interact with psychiatric medications, either reducing their effectiveness or increasing side effects. Always discuss all supplements you're taking or considering with your provider. We'll help you identify which supplements might be beneficial for your specific condition and which might be problematic when combined with your medications.

How do you incorporate natural or holistic treatments into medication management?

Our integrative approach means we often combine conventional medications with evidence-informed natural approaches. Depending on your specific situation, we might recommend nutritional interventions, targeted supplements, lifestyle modifications, mind-body practices, or other complementary approaches alongside medication. We consider factors like gut health, inflammation, hormonal balance, and metabolic function that conventional psychiatry often overlooks. This comprehensive approach can sometimes reduce the amount of medication needed or enhance its effectiveness.

What kind of testing do you use to guide medication and supplement recommendations?

Unlike conventional psychiatric practices that rely primarily on symptom reports, we sometimes recommend functional medicine testing to guide more precise treatment. This might include micronutrient analysis, hormone testing, inflammatory markers, genetic testing for medication metabolism, or other specialized assessments. These tests can help us identify underlying biological factors contributing to your symptoms and allow for more targeted medication and supplement recommendations. Testing is optional and its appropriateness is discussed on an individual basis.

Will I become dependent on psychiatric medication?

Most psychiatric medications are not addictive. Certain anti-anxiety medications (benzodiazepines) can create physical dependence when used regularly, which is why we prescribe them cautiously. Antidepressants, mood stabilizers, and antipsychotics do not cause dependence, though they should be discontinued gradually under medical supervision to avoid withdrawal symptoms.

Can I drink alcohol while taking psychiatric medication?

Alcohol can interact with many psychiatric medications, potentially reducing their effectiveness or increasing side effects. Some combinations can be dangerous. While occasional light drinking may be acceptable with certain medications, it's important to discuss your alcohol use openly with your provider so they can give you specific guidance for your situation.

Will I have to take medication for the rest of my life?

No, it depends. Treatment duration varies widely depending on your condition, response to treatment, and other factors. Some people benefit from shorter courses of medication (months), while others may need longer-term treatment (years). We regularly reassess the continued need for medication and discuss options for potentially reducing or discontinuing medication when appropriate.

What if I'm already taking medications prescribed by another doctor?

Please bring a complete list of all medications, supplements, and herbs you're currently taking to your first appointment. Your provider will review these carefully to ensure there are no problematic interactions with any newly prescribed medications. With your permission, we can also coordinate with your other healthcare providers to ensure integrated care.

Can I still do therapy if I'm taking medication?

Absolutely! In fact, research shows that for many conditions, the combination of medication and therapy provides better outcomes than either treatment alone. Medication can help reduce symptoms that might interfere with therapy, while therapy provides skills and insights that medication alone cannot. Our providers frequently collaborate with therapists to coordinate care.

What if I've tried medications before and they didn't help or caused bad side effects?

Previous medication experiences provide valuable information but don't mean you won't benefit from medication now. There are many different psychiatric medications available, and response can vary significantly between them. Your provider will carefully review your past experiences to help guide current treatment recommendations, potentially suggesting different medications or approaches that might be more suitable for you.

How are prescriptions handled and refilled?

We use electronic prescribing for all medications, sending prescriptions directly to your pharmacy. For refills, please contact our office. Allow 2-3 business days for refill processing. Controlled substances (like stimulants for ADHD) have stricter regulations and typically require monthly appointments, though this may be adjusted based on stability and treatment duration.
