ADHD Evaluations in Brooklyn, NY

ADHD Evaluations for Children, Teens, and Adults

In Brooklyn, NY and Online

Most people do not schedule an ADHD evaluation because they are looking for a label. They schedule one because something has not been adding up.

Maybe school has always taken more effort than it seems to take for others. Maybe work deadlines, unread emails, forgotten tasks, or unfinished projects have become harder to explain away. Maybe your child is bright and capable, but still struggling to focus, follow through, or manage emotions in a way that affects school, home life, or confidence.

An ADHD evaluation helps answer a more useful question than “Do I have ADHD?” It helps clarify what may be driving the difficulty and what kind of support is most likely to help.

At Mind Body Psychiatry, licensed clinical psychologists provide ADHD evaluations for children age 7 and older, adolescents, and adults. The process looks at your history, current symptoms, daily functioning, and related factors that may be affecting attention, organization, and emotional regulation. By the end, you should have a clearer understanding of what is going on and what to do next.

Is an ADHD Evaluation Right for You?

ADHD does not always look obvious from the outside. Some people are visibly restless or impulsive, while others seem high functioning but feel like they are constantly scrambling behind the scenes. Many adults who seek an ADHD evaluation have spent years assuming they were simply disorganized, inconsistent, overly sensitive, or not disciplined enough.

For children and teens, ADHD may show up as school frustration, emotional outbursts, unfinished assignments, trouble following directions, or difficulty sitting through tasks that require sustained focus. Sometimes the concern comes from a parent. Sometimes it comes from a teacher. Sometimes it comes from the child themselves, who knows they are trying but still cannot seem to keep up.

An evaluation can be helpful when attention, focus, organization, planning, impulsivity, or emotional regulation are interfering with daily life. It can also help when you are not sure whether ADHD is the right explanation. Anxiety, depression, trauma, sleep problems, learning differences, stress, and other concerns can overlap with ADHD symptoms, which is why a careful clinical evaluation matters.

Adults Who Have Always Wondered “Why Is This So Hard?”

Many adults come in after years of pushing through. They may have done well enough in school or work, but only by relying on pressure, last-minute effort, perfectionism, or long hours that no one else sees. Over time, the coping strategies stop working as well. More responsibility, parenting, demanding jobs, graduate school, or major life changes can make attention and executive functioning challenges harder to ignore.

An ADHD evaluation can help make sense of patterns that have followed you for years, including procrastination, difficulty starting tasks, missed deadlines, disorganization, emotional overwhelm, or inconsistent focus. The goal is not to reduce your life to a diagnosis. It is to understand whether ADHD is part of the picture and what kind of treatment or support would actually be useful.

Children and Teens Showing Signs of ADHD

For children and teens, ADHD can affect far more than school performance. It can influence confidence, family dynamics, friendships, emotional regulation, and the way a child sees themselves. A child who is constantly being corrected, reminded, or told to “try harder” may begin to believe they are lazy or careless when the real issue is how their brain manages attention and follow-through.

Parents often seek an evaluation when a child has difficulty completing assignments, staying seated, following multi-step directions, managing frustration, remembering materials, or keeping up with routines. A thoughtful evaluation can help clarify whether ADHD is present, whether something else is contributing, and what supports may help at home and school.

Why a Professional ADHD Evaluation Matters

Online ADHD quizzes can be a starting point, but they cannot tell the whole story. They may help you recognize symptoms, but they cannot determine whether those symptoms are caused by ADHD, anxiety, depression, chronic stress, trauma, sleep disruption, or another concern.

A professional evaluation looks at patterns over time. It considers how symptoms show up in more than one setting, how long they have been present, and how much they affect school, work, relationships, home life, and emotional well-being. It also helps separate ADHD from conditions that can look similar on the surface.

This matters because treatment depends on the reason behind the symptoms. Someone whose attention problems are caused mostly by anxiety may need a different plan than someone with ADHD. A child with a learning difference may need different school support than a child whose main challenge is attention regulation. An adult with ADHD and depression may need both concerns addressed, not just one.

At Mind Body Psychiatry, the evaluation is done by licensed clinical psychologists who are trained to look at the full picture. Instead of relying on one score, one questionnaire, or one brief appointment, we use clinical judgment, history, symptom measures, and assessment tools to understand what is happening and how to move forward.

Reasons People Schedule an ADHD Evaluation

ADHD affects attention, but attention is only one piece of it. Many people with ADHD struggle most with executive functioning, which includes planning, organization, time management, task initiation, working memory, and self-monitoring. These skills are used constantly in daily life, so when they are difficult, the impact can feel much bigger than “trouble focusing.”

Having some of these signs does not automatically mean you or your child has ADHD. It does mean an evaluation may be worth considering if these patterns are persistent, disruptive, or causing stress at school, work, home, or in relationships.

Difficulty Staying Organized

For adults, this may look like clutter, missed appointments, unpaid bills, forgotten emails, or losing track of important details. For children and teens, it may look like messy backpacks, missing assignments, misplaced materials, or needing repeated reminders for routines that should feel familiar by now.

Trouble Starting or Finishing Tasks

Many people with ADHD know exactly what needs to be done but still cannot get started. Others begin with energy and then lose momentum halfway through. Tasks that are boring, repetitive, complicated, or emotionally stressful can feel especially difficult, even when the person genuinely wants to complete them.

Racing Thoughts and Mental Restlessness

ADHD does not always look like physical hyperactivity. For many people, the restlessness is internal. Thoughts jump from one thing to another. It can feel difficult to slow down, relax, or stay with one task without being pulled toward something else.

Inconsistent Focus

One of the most confusing parts of ADHD is that focus can be strong in some situations and nearly impossible in others. A person may be able to focus intensely on something interesting, urgent, or rewarding, then struggle with ordinary tasks that do not provide the same stimulation. This inconsistency is often misunderstood as laziness or lack of effort.

Emotional Regulation Challenges

ADHD can affect how quickly emotions rise and how difficult they are to manage. Children may become frustrated easily, melt down after school, or react strongly to disappointment. Adults may feel overwhelmed, impatient, sensitive to criticism, or quick to shut down when tasks pile up.

Working Harder Than Everyone Else

Many people seeking an ADHD evaluation are not failing. They are exhausted. They may be getting through life, but only with constant effort, late nights, reminders, lists, urgency, or pressure. An evaluation can help explain why life has felt harder than it seems to be for others and what can be done to make it more manageable.

What Happens During an ADHD Evaluation?

An ADHD evaluation is not a single test. It is a clinical process designed to understand your symptoms in context. The exact structure may vary based on age, concerns, and clinical needs, but the process generally includes an intake appointment, assessment measures, and a feedback session where results and recommendations are reviewed.

The evaluation is meant to answer several questions. Are the symptoms consistent with ADHD? Are they better explained by something else? Are there additional concerns that should be addressed? What treatment options or supports make sense based on the findings?

  • Step 1: Clinical Intake

The first step is a one-on-one appointment with Beth Wecksell, PsyD, or Dr. Linda Perez-Puelles, PsyD. During this session, your psychologist will ask about current concerns, developmental and medical history, school or work functioning, emotional health, sleep, family history, and any previous evaluations or treatment.

For children and teens, parent input is an important part of the process. When appropriate, information from school may also help clarify how symptoms show up outside the home. For adults, the intake may include questions about childhood patterns, work performance, relationships, daily routines, and coping strategies that have developed over time.

  • Step 2: Assessment and Clinical Testing

After the intake, your psychologist will use assessment tools selected for your situation. This may include standardized questionnaires, clinical rating scales, attention or executive functioning measures, and other tools that help provide a fuller picture of how symptoms are affecting daily life.

Testing is helpful, but it is not treated as the entire answer. ADHD is a clinical diagnosis, which means results must be interpreted alongside your history, symptoms, functioning, and the psychologist’s clinical judgment. This is what allows the evaluation to be more meaningful than a quick screening or online checklist.

Because ADHD shares symptoms with many other conditions, test results are never interpreted in isolation. Every assessment is reviewed by a licensed clinical psychologist who considers your history, symptoms, functioning, and clinical presentation before making diagnostic recommendations.

  • Step 3: Reviewing Your Results and Next Steps

Once the assessment is complete, you will meet with your psychologist to review the findings. This is where the pieces come together. Your psychologist will explain whether the results support an ADHD diagnosis, whether another concern may better explain the symptoms, and what the recommended next steps are.

If ADHD is diagnosed, recommendations may include therapy, medication management, executive functioning support, school or workplace accommodations, behavioral strategies, parent guidance, or a combination of approaches. If ADHD is not the best explanation, you will still leave with a clearer understanding of what may be contributing to the difficulties and what kind of care may be more appropriate.

What You’ll Leave With

A good evaluation should not leave you more confused than when you started. It should give you language for what has been happening, a clinical explanation that makes sense, and a plan that feels grounded in your actual life.

After your ADHD evaluation, you will have a clear review of the findings and recommendations. For some patients, that includes an ADHD diagnosis and treatment planning. For others, it may mean learning that anxiety, mood symptoms, sleep issues, stress, learning differences, or another concern is playing a larger role than expected.

Either way, the value of the evaluation is clarity. You should understand what the results mean, what they do not mean, and what steps are worth considering next. That may include treatment at Mind Body Psychiatry, coordination with another provider, school or work accommodations, or practical strategies to support daily functioning.

Why Families Choose Mind Body Psychiatry for ADHD Evaluations

Choosing where to get evaluated matters. ADHD evaluations are not just paperwork or test results. They often shape treatment decisions, school support, medication conversations, and the way a person understands themselves or their child.

At Mind Body Psychiatry, evaluations are completed by licensed clinical psychologists who work closely with children, teens, and adults. Patients come to us because they want more than a quick answer. They want someone to listen carefully, ask the right questions, explain the findings clearly, and recommend next steps that are realistic.

Our team also works within a broader psychiatry and therapy practice, which can be helpful when treatment is needed after the evaluation. If medication management, therapy, parent support, or additional mental health care is recommended, patients do not have to start from scratch trying to understand where to go next.

The evaluation process is careful without being cold. It is clinical without feeling rushed or impersonal. We know many people arrive feeling frustrated, uncertain, or tired of not having answers. Our job is to help make the next step clearer.

Getting Started

The first step is scheduling a consultation. During that initial conversation, we can answer questions about the evaluation process, discuss whether an ADHD evaluation is the right fit, and explain what to expect if you decide to move forward.

If the evaluation is appropriate, we will guide you through the next steps, including intake forms, scheduling, assessment measures, and the feedback appointment. You will not be expected to figure out the process on your own.

ADHD evaluations are available for children age 7 and older, adolescents, and adults. Appointments are available in Brooklyn, and some parts of the process may be available through secure telehealth when clinically appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I need an ADHD evaluation?

An evaluation may be helpful if problems with focus, organization, follow-through, impulsivity, emotional regulation, or time management are interfering with school, work, home life, or relationships. It may also be helpful if you are unsure whether ADHD is the right explanation and want a professional assessment before making treatment decisions.

Can adults be diagnosed with ADHD?

Yes. Many adults are diagnosed later in life, especially if they were able to compensate for symptoms when they were younger. Adult ADHD may show up as chronic disorganization, difficulty finishing tasks, missed deadlines, emotional overwhelm, inconsistent focus, or feeling like daily responsibilities require more effort than they should.

Do you evaluate children and teens?

Yes. Mind Body Psychiatry provides ADHD evaluations for children age 7 and older, adolescents, and adults. For younger patients, the evaluation may include parent input and, when appropriate, information related to school functioning.

Is ADHD testing the same as an online quiz?

No. Online quizzes can help someone recognize possible symptoms, but they cannot diagnose ADHD. A clinical evaluation looks at history, symptoms, functioning, assessment results, and other factors that may be contributing to attention or executive functioning difficulties.

Does every evaluation result in an ADHD diagnosis?

No. Sometimes the evaluation confirms ADHD. Other times, symptoms may be better explained by anxiety, depression, trauma, sleep problems, learning differences, chronic stress, or another concern. The purpose of the evaluation is to understand what is actually happening, not to force a diagnosis.

What happens if I am diagnosed with ADHD?

If ADHD is diagnosed, your psychologist will review treatment recommendations with you. Depending on your needs, that may include therapy, medication management, executive functioning strategies, school or workplace accommodations, parent guidance, or additional support.

Can the evaluation help with school or workplace accommodations?

In some cases, evaluation findings may support recommendations for academic or workplace accommodations. Your psychologist can explain what documentation may be appropriate based on the results of the evaluation and your specific situation.

Do you offer virtual ADHD evaluations?

Some portions of the evaluation process may be available through secure telehealth when clinically appropriate. Our team will let you know what can be completed remotely and whether in-person appointments are recommended for your situation.

How long does the ADHD evaluation process take?

The evaluation is completed over more than one step so your psychologist has time to gather information, review assessment results, and provide a thoughtful explanation of the findings. The exact timeline may vary depending on scheduling, age, clinical needs, and the type of information being reviewed.

What should I bring to the first appointment?

It can be helpful to share any previous evaluations, relevant school records, medication history, therapy history, or notes about current symptoms and concerns. If you are scheduling an evaluation for your child, information from teachers or school support teams may also be useful when available.
